Day 10 - Don't Look!

Since Celtic times, the sighting of a large black dog with fiery red eyes foretold death to the one who saw it. However, the black dog in my photo takes a softer stance as the watchful guardian of a little girl who loved him. Made of iron, Black Dog stood before a store entrance on Broad street, and entranced the children who came to hug him or hop up on his back. Legend has it that one particular little girl, whom Black Dog was a favorite, died from scarlet fever. The shop owner gave the statue to the family. They placed the iron statue beside her grave in Hollywood Cemetery. It is rumored that the dog will come alive if someone tries to defile her grave! Tradition says that when you visit her final resting place, you leave a trinket or two behind: a hair bow or bracelet for the little girl, or a treat for Black Dog, her ever watchful friend.
